Overview

One area that strikes fear into the hearts of photographers are the words: ‘Using Artificial Light’. So much has this fear settled into some of us that we start calling ourselves ‘natural light photographers’. But this simply comes from the complexity that we feel flash will bring us.

Correct, skilled use of artificial light elevates your photography to a new level. You can keep shooting right into the night, both on the dance-floor and outside and present rich, atmospheric shots that show your skill and give you very happy clients. You can also get creative and deliver beautiful work that is not possible with natural light. In the studio, correct understanding of lighting, placement and design is critical to get the professional results you are aiming for. All of which increases the value you offer your clients and they will pay more for it.

Flash photography is not in itself overly complicated; based on a few simple rules of physics and camera technologies that we need to master, but the complexity comes from how it interacts with the other variables in photography of shutter speed, aperture and ISO and also the space you’re in.

We will cover all of this and with these skills and understanding in your toolkit, you can then ditch the long-winded and awkward trial-and-error approach and adapt intuitively to the conditions to get the look you are after. And all without a harsh glare or ‘crime scene’ photo in sight.

Many courses jump into crushing detail that is unnecessary and you can often leave with more questions that you arrived with.

My approach is different. With clear coaching and mentoring we build up knowledge and skills at a pace driven by you. I believe not only is this the best way of learning, but the best use of your investment – you want to spend it once, and then leave with all the skills you need built-in.

Each new area is backed up with practical sessions so you leave with an intuitive understanding which will allow you to create and share incredible images with your clients.

As your mentor, I am always very happy to hear from previous clients and provide further advice, answer any questions or even have quick calls on a particular subject. This resource is proving to be of great value to my attendees.

Course Content

Many photographers that produce great work in natural light struggle to work confidently when the lights go down, this is for them.

It also would suit someone that uses flash in a studio, outdoor or events setting, but has problems with consistency and quality of final shot.

Who is it for?

I walked away from the workshop so full of confidence, and with all the loose ends of my understanding finally cleared up. I have paid for two other courses on flash photography and was still very nervous about using flash at weddings. But something about the way Nick explained it from base principles just made total sense… being able to see the topics covered in action along the way with the practical examples was massively helpful. This was the best possible investment for my business.
