From Magicians to Lawyers - all aboard the 'Top Table' YouTube Series

The ‘Top Table’ YouTube series is one month old with a great programme of guests lined up. This week we welcome our first Lawyer

Not to forget of course the amazing guests we have already hosted; Carol Smith, our awesome Celebrant, Emily Woolley, founder of the South West’s largest wedding hair and makeup business, and magician Darren Campbell who baffled me with a card trick that I cannot work out, despite using slow-motion on the footage!

Lawyer Up!

Things are changing up for this week though as we have Contract and Commercial Litigation Lawyer Sam Mayer from law firm Henriques Griffiths. What’s that now? Why am I having a lawyer on the show? That’s a great question, let me tell you…

COVID-19 is hitting venues hard as couples are forced to cancel or postpone their weddings. This is an awful time for those businesses but, from my discussions with couples in many Facebook groups, a minority of venues are inflicting questionable terms on couples such as forcing them to pay their full fee! Even though the wedding may not go ahead!

My background in business and contracts is not popular at parties (this is why I learned to play the guitar) but it does give me confidence in my view that UK contract law does not permit businesses to do this. The government’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) produce pretty clear guidelines in this area.

I have been advising Brides and Grooms on this matter but ultimately I am not a Lawyer…. but luckily I have found someone who is!

Law firm partner Sam Mayer to feature on the show tomorrow, and provide some guidance to couples in this area. Initial discussions confirm that there may indeed be some contractual dodgyness afoot, but having some expert information on this topic will likely be really valuable for couples if they are indeed being treated unfairly or unlawfully.

As always, please do subscribe to the channel (and hit the Bell for notifications) so you catch the interview when it goes live!.

The goal of the ‘Top Table’ series on the Nick Church Photography YouTube channel is to show the wedding industry the personalities behind the best suppliers. Please join the growing community that are benefitting from these interviews.

Talking of contracts, I run a business coaching session called Lawyer Up! which covers contracts, GDPR, and other legal and legislative areas. If you are a small business and interested in support in this area, please contact us
